It'd also give Tim the chance to invent a bunch of high-end criminals, and make them all try to work together, which goes about as well as trapping a bunch of cats in a sack. Where Liar's Island had been a chance for us to check out Jalmeray in a way we hadn't since the module Cult of the Ebon Destroyers, this book would focus on some of our more familiar settings: Lastwall and Nirmathas. Which is why, when Tim pitched me on the idea of a new Rodrick and Hrym novel with the phrase "Rodrick and Hrym join the Suicide Squad," I was hooked. It's bombastic action that understands the frequent absurdity that goes hand in hand with being awesome. This is Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser territory, as well as that of glorious 80s action-comedies like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon, and the snappy self-aware dialogue of a Tarantino or George Clooney character. The world isn't designed to be humorous-it's as serious as our own-but the characters find the humor inherent in even the bleakest circumstances, often at their own expense. Tim's humor, on the other hand, comes from the characters he creates. If you're not careful, it can end up feeling juvenile or corny, or else become a farce-a wink-nudge pastiche that is as much laughing at fantasy as with it. See, humorous fantasy is really, really difficult to do well. I know I'll be enjoying the adrenaline rush the whole way.Įric Belisle Pathfinder Tales Wendy N. So get ready for Wendy to ramp up the adventure, the horror, and the thrills, all while delving into the sanity-skewing intersection of the Elder Mythos and Golarion-a perfect appetizer to get you in the mood for the new Strange Aeons Adventure Path. Strange structures, murderous cultists, and mind-twisting art are just a few of the disturbing elements Jendara and her crew encounter on exploring the new island-but these are hardly the most terrifying things they'll be forced to face before the end. Yet the stars are aligned against her, and when an unnatural tsunami devastates the area, it leaves a mysterious island in its wake. In Starspawn, Jendara returns, and is once more trying to find a measure of peace in life.

I mean, come on-I could practically see Wendy grinning with glee at being able to pit seafaring barbarians against Lovecraftian horrors. So when I heard that Wendy would be tackling another Pathfinder Tales novel, Starspawn, I was thoroughly excited, even before I found out the premise would be. Her descriptions can be brutally detailed (did I mention her penchant for horror, both subtle and shocking?). Her characters feel incredibly vibrant and alive. Reading Skinwalkers made me realize I'd never want to get into a cage match with Wendy, because she refuses to pull a punch. However, raids by a brutal clan of shapeshifters threatens the safety of her island home, and Jendara must use her wits and axe-wielding prowess to defend those she cares for at all costs. In her first Pathfinder Tales novel, Skinwalkers, Wendy introduced us to Jendara, an ex-pirate who'd given up her marauding ways to try and raise her son. The thing is, this same energy comes through in her writing. Whatever the project, Wendy is sure to bring a real passion to it. It's practically impossible to not to get swept up in her enthusiasm about any topic you happen to latch on to, be it a favorite recipe or a fantastic horror flick. If you ever get the chance to meet Wendy Wagner in person, you'll likely come away a little dazzled by the joyful energy she projects.
